Introduction for developers

Developers can use the toolkit to understand the specific needs of the local community arising from their development, enhance their partnership working capacity and provide greater value in return for private sector investment and involvement in sustainable communities.

The toolkit recognises that developers have an important partner role in enabling development through skills and financial investment in the provision of community, cultural and sporting assets. However responsibility and opportunities should be shared across the delivery partnership.

Each section of the toolkit provides information and guidance to help developers:

  • understand the policy framework
  • navigate the process of delivery
  • collaborate effectively in partnerships
  • deliver successful and viable schemes
  • recognise existing planning tools and guidance
  • learn lessons from schemes delivered around the English regions.

"Building is one of our contributions to culture and shows the sort of society we want to create. At best, developments that contribute to a place’s culture benefit from wide publicity and critical acclaim”.
